Types of Criminal Cases

Misdemeanor Charges

Misdemeanors are punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Gross Misdemeanors are punishable by up to 365 days in jail and a $5,000 fine. In Washington State, both types of cases are heard in District or Municipal Courts.

Capital Crimes & Felony Charges

Felony charges are heard in the Superior Court in which the allegation occurred. Standard punishments upon conviction can be anywhere from community service hours up to life in jail. In King County your case might be heard in downtown Seattle or in Kent at the Regional Justice Center. It depends on whether your case happened either North or South of the Tukwila – Renton line.
